Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 14/Verse 16

कर्मणः सुकृतस्याहुः सात्त्विकं निर्मलं फलम् ।


रजसस्तु फलं दुःखमज्ञानं तमसः फलम् ॥१४- १६॥

karmaṇaḥ sukṛtasyāhuḥ sāttvikaṃ nirmalaṃ phalam ।

rajasastu phalaṃ duḥkhamajñānaṃ tamasaḥ phalam ॥14- 16॥

They say, the fruit of well performed action is sattvic without stain, but the fruit of rajas is misery, [and] the fruit of tamas is ignorance. 


karmaṇas (neuter, genitive, singular) = of action 

sukṛtasya (neuter, genitive, singular) = of well performed 

āhus (past tense, 3rd person, plural) = they say 

sāttvikam (neuter, nominative, singular) = sattvic 

nirmalam (neuter, nominative, singular) = without stain 

phalam (neuter, nominative, singular) = fruit 


rajasas (neuter, genitive, singular) = of rajas  

tu (conjunction) (indeclinable) = but 

phalam (neuter, nominative, singular) = fruit 

duḥkham (neuter, nominative, singular) = misery 

ajñānam (neuter, nominative, singular) = ignorance 

tamasas (neuter, genitive, singular) = of tamas 

phalam (neuter, nominative, singular) = fruit
