Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 17/Verse 5

अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः ।

दम्भाहंकारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः ॥१७- ५॥

aśāstravihitaṃ ghoraṃ tapyante ye tapo janāḥ ।


dambhāhaṃkārasaṃyuktāḥ kāmarāgabalānvitāḥ ॥17- 5॥

Humans beings who are joined with egotism and deceit accompanied by desire, anger, and force, they undergo a penance that is terrible [and] not performed according to scriptural authority.  


aśāstravihitam (aśāstra + vihitam) (past passive participle, neuter, accusative, singular) = not performed according to scriptural authority   

ghoram (neuter, accusative, singular) = terrible 

tapyante (present tense, 3rd person, plural) = they undergo penance 

ye (pronoun, 3rd person, masculine, nominative, plural) = they who 

tapas (neuter, accusative, singular) = austerity 

janās (masculine, nominative, plural) = human beings

dambhāhaṃkārasaṃyuktās (dambha + ahaṃkāra + saṃyuktās) (masculine, nominative, plural) = joined with egotism and deceit 

kāmarāgabalānvitās (kāma + rāga + bala + anvitās) (masculine, nominative, plural) = accompanied by desire, anger, and force
