Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 17/Verse 1

अर्जुन उवाच

ये शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य यजन्ते श्रद्धयान्विताः ।


तेषां निष्ठा तु का कृष्ण सत्त्वमाहो रजस्तमः ॥१७- १॥


arjuna uvāca


ye śāstravidhimutsṛjya yajante śraddhayānvitāḥ ।



teṣāṃ niṣṭhā tu kā kṛṣṇa sattvamāho rajastamaḥ ॥17- 1॥

Arjuna said: They who having cast aside scriptural injunction, but full of faith they sacrifice. What is the position of them? Is it sattva, rajas, [or] tamas, Krishna?



arjuna (masculine, nominative, singular) = Arjuna 


uvāca (past tense, 3rd person, singular) = one said 


ye (pronoun, 3rd person, masculine, nominative, plural) = they who


śāstravidhim (śāstra + vidhim) (masculine, accusative, singular) = scriptural injunction 


utsṛjya (gerund) (indeclinable) = having cast aside 


yajante (present tense, 3rd person, plural) = they sacrifice 


śraddhayānvitās (śraddha + yānvitās) (masculine, nominative, plural) = full of faith  


teṣām (masculine, genitive, plural) = of them  


niṣṭhā (feminine, nominative, singular) = position


tu (conjunction) (indeclinable) = but 


kā (interrogative) (indeclinable) = what ?


kṛṣṇa (masculine, vocative, singular) = Krishna 


sattvam (neuter, nominative, singular) = sattva


āho (interrogative) (indeclinable) = is it?


rajas (neuter, nominative, singular) = rajas 


tamas (neuter, nominative, singular) = tamas
