Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 17/Verse 4

यजन्ते सात्त्विका देवान्यक्षरक्षांसि राजसाः ।


प्रेतान्भूतगणांश्चान्ये यजन्ते तामसा जनाः ॥१७- ४॥

yajante sāttvikā devānyakṣarakṣāṃsi rājasāḥ ।

pretānbhūtagaṇāṃścānye yajante tāmasā janāḥ ॥17- 4॥


Those humans who are characterized by sattva sacrifice to the gods, those who are characterized by rajas [sacrifice to] the spirits and demons, and the others, characterized by tamas, [sacrifice to] the departed hordes of living beings. 


yajante (present tense, 3rd person, plural) = they sacrifice

sāttvikās (masculine, nominative, plural) = those who are characterized by sattva 

devān (masculine, accusative, plural) = the gods 

yakṣarakṣāṃsi (neuter, accusative, plural) = spirits and demons  

rājasās (masculine, nominative, plural) = those who are characterized by rajas


pretān (past passive participle, masculine, accusative, plural) = the departed 

bhūtagaṇān (bhūta + gaṇān) (masculine, accusative, plural) = hordes of living beings

ca (conjunction) (indeclinable) = and

anye (pronoun, 3rd person, masculine, nominative, plural) = others

yajante (present tense, 3rd person, plural) = they sacrifice 

tāmasās (masculine, nominative, plural) = those characterized by tamas 

janās (masculine, nominative, plural) = humans
