Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 17/Verse 19

मूढग्राहेणात्मनो यत्पीडया क्रियते तपः ।


परस्योत्सादनार्थं वा तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् ॥१७- १९॥

mūḍhagrāheṇātmano yatpīḍayā kriyate tapaḥ ।

parasyotsādanārthaṃ vā tattāmasamudāhṛtam ॥17- 19॥

With a deluded notion of the self the austerity which is performed with torture or with the purpose of destroying another, that is declared to be tamasic. 


mūḍhagrāheṇa (mūḍha + grāheṇa) (masculine, instrumental, singular) = with a deluded notion

ātmanas (masculine, genitive singular) = of the self

yad (pronoun, 3rd person, neuter, nominative, singular) = that which 

pīḍayā (feminine, instrumental, singular) = with torture

kriyate (present tense, passive, 3rd person, singular) = it is performed  

tapas (neuter, nominative, singular) = austerity 


parasyotsādanārtham (parasya + utsādana + artham) (neuter, nominative, singular) = with the purpose of destroying another  

vā (conjunction) (indeclinable) = or

tad (pronoun, 3rd person, masculine, nominative, singular) = that 

tāmasam (neuter, accusative, singular) = tamasic 

udāhṛtam (past passive participle, neuter, accusative, singular) = declared to be
