Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 2/Verse 3

क्लैब्यं मा स्म गमः पार्थ नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते ।
क्षुद्रं हृदयदौर्बल्यं त्यक्त्वोत्तिष्ठ परन्तप ॥२- ३॥

klaibyaṃ mā sma gamaḥ pārtha naitattvayyupapadyate ।

kṣudraṃ hṛdayadaurbalyaṃ tyaktvottiṣṭha parantapa ॥2- 3॥

O son-of-Prithā, certainly do not go to cowardice. This is not fitting within you. Having abandoned faint-hearted baseness, O Parantapa, rise up!

Word-for-word translation

klaibyam (accusative, singular) = cowardice

mā (indeclinable) = not (negative used with injunctive forms)

sma (indeclinable) = certainly

gamas (injunctive) = should go

pārtha (vocative, singular) = O son-of-Prithā

na (indeclinable) = not

etat (demonstrative pronoun, nominative, singular) = this

tvayi (pronoun, 2nd person, locative, singular) = within you

upapadyate (present tense, 3rd person, singular) = it is fitting

kṣudram (accusative, singular) = baseness

hṛdayadaurbalyam (hṛdaya + daurbalyam) (compound) (accusative, singular) = faint-hearted

tyaktvā (gerund) = having abandoned

uttiṣṭha (vocative, singular) = rise up!

parantapa (vocative, singular) = O Parantapa

Commentary

This verse has a good example of a negative injunctive. There are many interesting interpretations of "klaibyam" in previous translations like "unmanliness", "eunuch", etc.
