Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 1/Verse 26

Chapter 1/Verse 26

तत्रापश्यत्स्थितान्पार्थः पितॄनथ पितामहान् ।

आचार्यान्मातुलान्भ्रातॄन्पुत्रान्पौत्रान्सखींस्तथा ॥१-२६॥

tatrāpaśyatsthitānpārthaḥ pitṝnatha pitāmahān ।

ācāryānmātulānbhrātṝnputrānpautrānsakhīṃstathā

॥1-26॥

Then son of Prithā saw them standing there. Fathers, grandfathers, preceptors, maternal uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, as well as friends.

भीष्मद्रोणप्रमुखतः सर्वेषां च महीक्षिताम् ।

उवाच पार्थ पश्यैतान्समवेतान्कुरूनिति ॥१-२५॥

bhīṣmadroṇapramukhataḥ sarveṣāṃ ca mahīkṣitām ।

uvāca pārtha paśyaitānsamavetānkurūniti ॥1-25॥

In front of Bhīṣma and Droṇa and all of these rulers of the earth, O son of Prithā said, "Behold these gathered Kurus!"


bhīṣmadroṇapramukhatas (stem form: bhīṣmadroṇapramukhata) (bhīṣma + droṇa + pramukhatas) (tatpurūṣa compound, adverb) (indeclinable) = in front of Bhīṣma and Droṇa

sarveṣām (masculine, genitive plural) = of all these

pārtha (stem form; pārtha) (masculine, vocative, singular) = O son of Prithā (epithet of Arjuna)

This verse is pretty straight forward, but some translations seem to confuse the grammar of the word "pārtha". "Pārtha" is an epithet of Arjuna and it is in the vocative class and in singular number. Some translations seem to have Arjuna talking to himself, calling and praising himself "Pārtha" in this verse, versus the narrator of the story stating what Arjuna (a.k.a. "Pārtha") said.

Chapter 1/Verse 24

एवमुक्तो हृषीकेशो गुडाकेशेन भारत ।

सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये स्थापयित्वा रथोत्तमम् ॥१-२४॥

evamukto hṛṣīkeśo guḍākeśena bhārata ।

senayorubhayormadhye sthāpayitvā rathottamam

॥1-24॥

O descendant-of-Bharata, in that way, it was spoken by Guḍākeśa. Hṛṣīkeśa having positioned the excellent chariot in the middle of both armies.

dhārtarāṣṭrasya durbuddheryuddhe priyacikīrṣavaḥ ॥1-23॥

I behold those wanting to fight assembled here in battle who are desirous to please the evil-mind of the son of Dhārtarāṣṭra.

यावदेतान्निरिक्षेऽहं योद्‌धुकामानवस्थितान् ।

कैर्मया सह योद्धव्यमस्मिन् रणसमुद्यमे ॥१-२२॥

yāvadetānnirikṣe'haṃ yod‌dhukāmānavasthitān ।

kairmayā saha yoddhavyamasmin raṇasamudyame

॥1-22॥


I gaze at all these [warriors] standing firm, eager to fight. Whom will fight with me in this epic battle?

हृषीकेशं तदा वाक्यमिदमाह महीपते ।

सेनयोरुभयोर्मध्ये रथं स्थापय मेऽच्युत ॥१-२१॥

hṛṣīkeśaṃ tadā vākyamidamāha mahīpate ।

senayorubhayormadhye rathaṃ sthāpaya me'cyuta ॥1-21॥

Then, O' Lord of the Earth, he (Arjuna) said these words to Hṛṣīkeśa [Krishna]. O' Acyuta (Krishna), position my war-chariot at the middle of both armies.
